Why You Shouldnt Underestimate the Importance of a Cover Letter
Why You Shouldnt Underestimate the Importance of a Cover LetterWhy You Shouldnt Underestimate the Importance of a Cover LetterJob binnenseekers often spend a great deal of time perfecting their resume. And while a strong one can play a large part in landing an interview, applicants should not ignore the importance of a cover letter. It may be as(if not more) important to grabbing an employers attention. Most people dont understand what a cover letter is designed to do, so they dont value them, says Porschia Parker, founder ofFly High Coaching. A cover letter is another absatzwirtschaft tool thats part of your professional brand. It helps to make your initial impression on the reviewer/hiring manager and lets them know briefly why youre a great fit for the position.Need further evidence about the importance of a cover letter? Consider the following reasons why you should treat your cover letter with the same respect as your resumeSome hiring managers wont consider your application witho ut one.Since a good cover letter cant be whipped off, employers often view a thoughtful one as a sign that you are truly interested in this particular position. The letter also provides the hiring manager a way to judge your communication abilities and attention to detail. You can stress desirable attributes.Does a central theme or trait keep popping up in the job posting or in your research on this company? Highlight your strength in this area. The cover letter can contain actual examples from your experience, providing a more memorable impression than only touching on this quality in a resume. It provides the opportunity to explain yourself. The way I see it, the cover letter is a chance to saywhat is NOT in a resume. Job seekers should fill in the gaps a bit, says Vicky Oliver, author of301 Smart Answers to Tough Interview Questions. For career changers, such a forum may make the difference between consideration and the rejection pile. You wont be the typical candidate that hiring man agers are looking for, and odds are that you wont necessarily meet every preference/requirement they have. The cover letter is your opportunity to mention your transferrable skills and reassure them that you can meet their expectations, Parker says. She also notes that cover letters can be incredibly important to those reentering the workforce. Some people might assume that your skills wont be sharp or that you dont have current knowledge for the role.Youcan address those concerns and explain your absence in a cover letter, Parker says. You demonstrate personality.Remember, people hire people they like. A cover letter helps the reader get to know you and envision you as a member of the team. Some candidates find it nerve-wracking to walk that fine line between being personable and oversharing, but the effort can pay off big time.As Oliver says, The truth is that a good cover letter entails some risk because, unlike a resume, a cover letter has a voice. Whether the tone of theletter is sincere, elegant, or self-deprecating, its as if the job seeker is speaking to the potential employer. The key thing to remember is that the biggest risk in a cover letter is taking no risk at all.

How to Socialize at Work When You Dont Drink - The Muse
How to Socialize at Work When You Dont Drink - The MuseHow to Socialize at Work When You Dont Drink There are certain personal conversations that inevitably (and sometimes awkwardly) make their way into the workplace. For example, you might have to tell your boss that youre vegan when they schedule a business lunch at your local steakhouse. Or, maybe you need to mention that youre color blind and have trouble parsing charts that are red and green (true story, my brother had to do this). Or you might have to reveal during your company happy hour that you dont drink. This can be an especially tricky situation, as alcohol is a pretty common part of socializing with co-workers, mingling at networking fests, or meeting with potential clients. There are plenty of reasons why you may choose elend to drink- religious reasons, personal reasons, health reasons, or a history of addiction, or maybe you just dont like the taste. Whatever the rationale, heres how to navigate it at workTake the Press ure Off YourselfIan Foster, an entrepreneur based in Alaska, hasnt drank since he was a teenager. When he travels for work, specifically when attending booking conferences for music tours with his business partner, hes constantly turning down offers for drinks. These are people I want to impress and I want to like me. Theyre people that its important to socialize with, because theyre not just looking at the power of my craft, theyre looking at the way I get along with other people, he says. And his first concern when he mentions he doesnt drink is that people will think hes not fun.Kate Campion, blogger and founder of My Sweet Home Life, felt similarly after she stopped drinking It was actually harder for me when I first stopped drinking and had to go from being the party girl at my workplace to the one who was getting sober. I really had no option at the beginning than just to say no to all things until I was comfortable handling situations involving alcohol.Having to bring up somet hing as personal as choosing not to drink in front of your colleagues can be incredibly daunting. Theres a fear, as Foster described to me, that you bring less to the table. Or, that people will hold your past against you or coerce you to participate, as was the case with Campion. However, many of the people I spoke with emphasized that while peer pressure isnt uncommon, its usually a lot less present than youd think.I think a lot of people go into unterstellung situations thinking you have to drink in order to become part of the in crowd, says Foster. Thats such a lie- because Ive had so many people who give me a hard time in the moment...but theyve all come back and said, I respect that.Foster goes on to mention that not only do people respect his decision, but theyre also mora inclined to trust his character and judgement They know Im always going to be sober and Im always going to be clear- if something needs to happen they can trust my intellect to handle it.The point? Youre pro bably putting more pressure on yourself to participate than others are putting on you. So stick to your guns and go in confident that in the end nobody really cares whether or not you drink.Practice What Youll SayOf course, pressure mucksmuschenstill exists, and being able to handle it is important- for your health and for your work relationships.I think its so individual, says Kelifern Pomeranz, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist based in Silicon Valley who both specializes in addiction and is a non-drinker herself. A lot of how much you share depends on your company culture, she says. Do you normally share personal details with your manager or co-workers? And, do you feel comfortable doing so?Often Pomeranz will role play with her clients to practice how theyll tell their stories and how they should handle various responses. Doing this can take the pressure off in the moment and help you stand your ground when someone broaches the subject. And you dont have to give all the details, s he adds. It can be as simple as saying I dont drink or politely declining their offer.Foster usually picks this strategy when meeting with business contacts Im not trying to sell out or make it sound like a negotiation, so its important to be firm with it. When someone offers him a drink- in one instance he described, a woman basically shoved it under his nose- he declines. But I smile and I thank them, and I thank them sincerely, he adds. Drinks are expensive, he explains, and so he understands the person is making a nice gesture and thats worth acknowledging. And then I quickly move on to something else. Like, How about this karaoke, isnt this crazy? No matter your situation, says Pomeranz, you have the right to choose whether you tell your story. Having a line in your back pocket such as I used to drink and I choose not to now or I dont like the taste of alcohol or I have to drive home may be all you need to get people to change the topic. You can even inject some humor to keep th e conversation light, as Rob Lewis- who works in sales at an equipment rental company and decided to stop drinking altogether shortly after a work mishap several years ago- suggests. My usual response is something goofy like, The world cant handle me sober, so imagine if I was drunk. In short, you dont owe people anything- so dont be afraid to turn them away. People that are really in your face about it arent respectful of you and your choices, says Campion. Have an Alternative Plan in PlaceSometimes, it may not make sense to explain yourself- or, it does but the explanation still isnt convincing the person to leave you alone. Many of the people I spoke with agreed that when this happens, its best to have some kind of backup plan in place. Maybe that means ordering yourself a seltzer or water so people see something in your hand and are less likely to bring it up. Or, you can offer to be the designated driver so its understood why youre not drinking. If I was in some awkward situation where not accepting a drink would raise flags, I would consider taking it but leaving it on the table, says Campion. Some people are perfectly comfortable being around co-workers who drink or going to events at bars. But others may not be.If you feel triggered by others drinking alcohol, do what you need to do to take care of yourself, says Pomeranz. You can take frequent breaks from the situation if needed, spend your time around other co-workers who dont drink or minimally drink, and leave the event early if you absolutely cannot tolerate it. And, of course, you can always choose not to go to an event altogether as long as its not mandatory.Find Activities and Places That Dont Require DrinkingTake advantage of those moments during the day when drinking is definitely not involved to get to know your co-workers in a more comfortable setting. Go on meeting walks, or grab coffee or lunch with individual colleagues.Outside the office, there are plenty of other options for team bonding. When attending conferences, he encourages his colleagues to go and do something fun like go-karting or something that takes us out of that bar environment, says Lewis. Or, hell simply suggest hanging out at a restaurant, where food is equally the focus- and where more or less your colleagues feel embarrassed if they get drunk there. Many companies also provide sports leagues and clubs for employees to join to get to know each other. But if theres nothing in place, make it happen- start your own thing, says Foster. Get a small group together that loves to read and create a book club. Or, take your team to an escape room challenge. Or, as we do at The Muse, gather a few folks together on a Friday night to play board games in the office. The key is to find something that feels like a tresor space for everyone, says Campion Sure people might be drinking at some of these, but its not the focus.Pay it ForwardAs someone who knows what its like to be a non-drinker at work, you have the power to change your companys culture to be more inclusive.Peoples reasons for not drinking are very personal. So I always give people the same respect that Im hoping to get myself, says Foster. This means that just as he doesnt like people prying into his reasons, he doesnt dig too deep into others. Many companies also dont think to organize activities around those who dont drink, so if youre part of your companys social committee or know people who are, you can help bring in some more activity-based functions that dont revolve around drinking, says Campion. You may feel alone in your situation, but you might be surprised to find that others are in a similar boat. If anything, some colleagues might appreciate the opportunity to get to know their teammates sans alcohol. The truth is- and you know this- just because you dont drink doesnt mean you cant still socialize and bond with your co-workers. If input from these employees isnt enough to convince you otherwise, just remember that 100% of your time together in the office is alcohol-free (Id hope), and that time can be just as valuable as any happy hour. Mainly, be yourself and do what makes you most comfortable- people will ultimately respect and admire you for it.

How to live the good life 4 easy secrets backed by research
How to live the good life 4 easy secrets backed by researchHow to live the good life 4 easy secrets backed by researchMuch of being an adult is about controlling your emotions - or even dampening them. But in the end, you want all these adult-y things you do to lead to positive emotions, right? The good life is all abouthow youfeel.Yet feelingsarent very welcomein the workplace and theyre elend taught much in schools. So as adults we get plenty of practicein controlling emotions butlittle info when it comes to boosting them. How do we learn about feeling good and connecting with others? I decided to call a guy who hasthe answersDacher Keltneris a professor of psychology and the director of the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley. Hes an expert on emotions - so much so that Pixar had him help with the development of the filmInside Out. His excellentbook isBorn to Be Good The Science of a Meaningful Life.Dacher has found that much of what makes youfeel goodand improves your relationshipscomes down tosome simple things we all learned as kids. Stupidly simple things. But thats why we forget to do them mora often - theyre just sobasic. But just because theyre simple doesnt mean theyre not powerful. Theyre way powerful. Godzilla-in-a-pissy-mood powerful. And the other benefit to these things being so simple is you have noexcuse not to do them more often, lazybones.Alright, lets get to it. Heres what Dacher says we need to rememberSmileYou have a happiness muscle. No, there isnt a machine for it at the gym, but when you use it, you feel good and your stress levels plummet. Its called the orbicularis oculi. Its the muscle around the eyes that flexes when you give a big, genuine smile. It doesntmakeyou happy, but the more you use it, the happier youll be. (Crows feet later in life are a small price to pay for joy, I promise you.)Some people might be thinkingSo what? Yeah, smiles show happiness. Big deal.Actually, Dacher had a similar ske pticism years ago. He knew smiles were important, but he had no idea justhowimportantRavenna Helson did the longest study of womens lives that there is The Mills Longitudinal Study. They followed 110 women who graduated from Mills College in 1959 and 1960. (In fact, theyrestillfollowing them more than half a century later.)Could the smiles in the womens graduation photos predict anything about their lives decades later? Ravenna was curious to know. Dacher wasnt. It seemed silly to him that one photo of one smile could predict someonesfuture like a crystal ball. But Dacher is a nice guy, so he helped anywayAnd the study would become one of the most important he would ever be involved in. What was the result? Heres DacherThe warmer the womans smile, 20 and 30 years later she was feeling more accomplished in her goals, she was handling stress better, she was getting along better with other people, and she was more happily married. No, dont race to the attic to find your graduation photo . Theres something more important you need to do give yourself more reasons to let out a huge smile each day. Chances are it mightmake your next few decades much better.(To learn the 7-step morning ritual that will keep you happy all day, clickhere.)Are you smiling? Good. Whats the next dead-simple thing you need to do more often?LaughIn hisbook, Dacher cites studies showing laughter improves negotiations, flirting, and relationship conflicts. Are you adding comedy specials to your Netflix queue yet? No? Then I have to bring out the big guns What happens when youdontlaugh? It can end your marriage.FromBorn to Be Good The Science of a Meaningful LifeFor couples who divorced on average 13.9 years after they were married, it was the absence of laughter that predicted the end of their bond. In the early stages of a marriage, anger and contempt are highly toxic. In the later phases of intimate relations, it is the dearth of laughter that leads individuals to part ways. The research shows la ughter does two things it physically calms you and signals playfulness to others. And those thingscan help you get through the most difficult times imaginable. How difficult?Dacher brought people who had recently lost a spouse into his lab and his kollektiv interviewed them. Some subjectslaughed when they told their stories, others didnt. Andwhen the team asked the bereaved more questions, it turned out those giggles signaled much, much more. Heres DacherThelaughers were better able to connect to other people in the process of bereavement. They were forming new social networks and new alliances. The second thing is, they handled stress better. They showed less stress over the next two to four years.Death and bereavement are serious stuff. But serious doesnt mean we shouldnt laugh. Sometimes it means we need to laughmore. Heres DacherWe often think laughter is not that consequential. We tell people not to laugh. Life is serious, but there may be no more serious antidote to living and no greater path to finding wisdom, than laughter.(To learnmore about how you canuse humor toimprove your life, clickhere.)Alright, time toget more interactive. What can you do with others that makes life great? Well, well need to learn about the weirdest study Dacher has ever doneTouchIll let Dacher explain this oneAperson comes to the lab and they stick their arm through this barrier. Another person comes into the lab. We give them a list of emotions and say, Touch that forearm over there and try to communicate these different emotions. That person clasps the arm to communicate gratitude, or they try to prise the person to try to communicate compassion, etc. Then the person who has just been touched on their forearm tries to guesstheemotion. And what happened? After receiving a mere quarter-second touchon the arm people were able to guess the correctemotionseven or eight times better than random chance. Those little touches are like a broadband connection of feelings between you an d others. Now notallemotions are correctly identified byallpeople. And, frankly, this explains a lot about some troubles you mayhave faced. What happened when a woman tried to convey anger when touching a mans arm? And what happened when a man tried to convey sympathy to a woman? UmmmFromBorn to Be Good The Science of a Meaningful LifeThe male participants had no idea what the females were doing, and the males judgment data amounted to a random collection of guesses at what the women were trying to convey. A womans anger does not seem to penetrate the skin of a man. Regrettably, it gets worse. The male participants attempts to communicate sympathy to the females were absolutely unintelligible to the females the males attempts at sympathy fell on deaf skin, so to speak.Okay, so touch communicates feelings, but not perfectly forallfeelings forallpeople. Buttouching is still vital for our relationships with others. To find out why, we need to talk about fighting in basketballDachers a b ig basketball player. He estimates hes played about 4500 games. How many fights has he seen in this game of big men crashing into one another? Zero. Statistically speaking, That level of violence (0) proves pickup basketball to be more peaceful than randomly sampled interactions between marital partners, siblings, family members at Thanksgiving, crowds celebrating their football teams triumph, (and) people parking to go to the theater. How the heck doessuch a physical sport produce so little violence? Because touching promotes cooperation. Actually, it does more than that it produces success.Afterstudying every team in the NBA during the 2008 season DacherfoundThe more the team touched each other, the better they played at the end of the year. It got them a couple of victories. Secondly, the more a player touched his teammates, the better they would play.Want to let others know how youre feeling? Want to be a better team? Touch the people around you.(To learn more about howto use tou ch to improve your life, clickhere.)I know what some people are thinking Smile, laugh, touch. That stuff is obvious. Tell me something I dont already know.I feel like Im being teased. But thats okay. In fact, its perfectTease The One You LoveWere not talking aboutbullyinghere were talking about playful teasing. And you may want to start doing it in your romantic relationship ASAP.Couples that tease each other are happier and stay together longer.FromBorn to Be Good The Science of a Meaningful LifeThe more satisfied couples were more adroit at teasing The playfulness of their fifteen-second teasing, we additionally found, predicted how happy the couples were six months later. In fact, playful teasing is so powerful that its a great ideain the middle of an argument. Heres DacherHappy couples tease a lot when theyre in conflict and they tease in these really goofy, lighthearted ways that say, The fact that you dont do the dishes bothers me, but I still love you. Its not that big a deal we can work this out. They tease in ways that allow them to express issues of conflict, but in a cooperative and pleasant way. It predicted how long theyd stay together.Being 100% sweetall the time isnt the safe bet, its sterile. Why Wont They Tell Me Why I Didnt Get the Job
Why Wont They Tell Me Why I Didnt Get the JobWhy Wont They Tell Me Why I Didnt Get the Job?Why Wont They Tell Me Why I Didnt Get the JobYou have a stellar resume that highlights your skills and major career accomplishments, and grabbed the attention of employer. That led you to an interview for a job that would have been a good career move. The interview went very well, but the hiring manager delivers the bad news a week later You didnt get the job.Youre disappointed, which is natural, but you accept the decision. Yet, you politely ask the hiring manager for feedback on your candidacy to help prepare you for the next opportunity. It seems such a harmless request, but maybe you could learn something about yourself. Then, the issue becomes how they answer your request, if they choose to answer at all.The employer will likely respond in one of three ways(1) They wont.Call this the non-response response. Several years ago, I welches one of two finalists for a job I was very confident I co uld perform well. But the hiring manager informed me by voice mail that I didnt get the job. I left him a voice mail with a polite request for feedback. Im still waiting.Employers are under no obligation to answer your request for post-interview feedback. After all, the information youre seeking is nice to have rather than need to have. Many employers have learned that its easier to give no response whatsoever because so many rejected candidates wind up (figuratively) shooting the messenger.Others are under strict orders to adhere to policies driven by their corporate lawyers, who fear the manager might say something that could get the company in trouble, such as if youre a woman We decided to go with the other candidate, because, well, even though you have the better level of experience, we need a guy in this job. (which, days later, earns the company a call from an attorney with the federal government).(2) They respond, but theyre vague. We were impressed with your credentials, but we went with a candidate who had more experience in fill in the blank.Thats all they said (and given its length, heck, they could have Tweeted it). Theres no hint of discrimination in that statement, but you still dont have constructive feedback to help you improve your chances the next time around. The vague response is only slightly better than the non-response, and although the employer is being maddeningly evasive, they are playing within the law, and probably company policy too.(3) Theyre refreshingly open and honest. They liked you, they really, really liked you Yet they felt the same about the person they hired. But because theyre (1) professional, (2) personable, (3) confident in their hiring practices, (4) very koranvers of what they want, and (5) fully knowledgeable about employment law, they offer you the feedback youre looking for. Perhaps they needed solid expertise in a software program youre just learning. Or maybe (ouch) you didnt know anything about the companys pro ducts so they assumed you werent really that interested in the job.Whatever it is, honest feedback can give you closure on the opportunity and leave you better prepared for the next one. And if they really liked you, the next opportunity could be with them when they have another suitable opening. You never know.THE LESSON?First, expect that you wont get the feedback youre looking for. Employers have their reasons legal or otherwise for not giving it to you. Thats why its important to know yourself, your skills, and your experience well. If you need feedback, its better to get it from someone you know and trust who can review your resume and help you practice your interview skills, especially before an interview.Looking for more on post-interview feedback? Alison Green addresses the topic on her blog, Ask a Manager, and on the U.S. News World Report web site.

Paying for Music Distribution
Paying for Music DistributionPaying for Music DistributionMusic distribution companies charge you for their services. They may offer to provide a certain level of service - such as getting X number of albums in Y number of stores - and may offer you access to a particular record store. But should you ever take them up on their offer? This kind of business structure for a music distribution company is perfectly legal, but it is akin to the model who pays to get on an agents books. These companies can get your music into stores, but there are a few reasons why you should think carefully before committing Downsides to Paying for Music Distribution Music distribution already costs money. A music distributor takes a cut of your album sales - thats how traditional distributors make money. Part of the benefit of this arrangement is that the distributor elend only has reason to get the record stores to stock copies of the album, they also have an added incentive to actively work with the stores to get the albums promoted on site - whether through special placement, sales, or in-store plays. If youre elend paying the distributor for their services up front, then they need you to sell records if theyre going to get paid. Getting albums into record shops is only part of the battle. Moving your album off the shelf and into the hands of the customers is what counts. As an indie artist or label, you need to work hard to promote your release to build awareness. When money is tight, if you divert precious cash from promotion to pay for distribution, your record might be in stores, but no one will know about it.Generating a poor track record with sales can hurt you in the long term. If your CD doesnt sell and sits buried among the thousands of competitors, the record store may take fewer units of your next CD, even refusing to stock it all together. Youll need to do some hard selling next time around since a brand new artist can generate more excitement in the retail ma rketplace than a musician with a record thats bombed. Services Without an Upfront Fee If youre simply looking for someone to put your album in stores, there are distribution services that gladly work with all labels without charging an upfront fee. These services make your product available - they do not actively sell your album, so they cant guarantee that it will be on the shelves. That might sound less appealing than paying for your album to be placed in stores, but unless you have the promotion in place to stimulate sales, its really not. Of course, working with these distributors is certainly less desirable than landing a distribution deal with a label that loves your music and has a label manager on the phone pushing your album into stores.

It#8217;s Time to do some Social Media Damage Control
It8217s Time to do some Social Media Damage Control Its Time to do some Social Media Damage Control Using social media platforms as a means for showcasing ones accomplishments and reputable personal character traits may positively influence an employers decision. If used appropriately social media helps individuals stand out from other job applicants. For students, photographs of traveling excursions and participation in extracurricular activities attract positive attention from admissions officers. erreichbar reputations aligned to academic and professional goals offer increased opportunities for impressing HR managers, future employers and university representatives. As a parent of two teenage boys, I understand the frequent exposure young children experience with regards to social media. Children and teenagers often fail to understand that one silly photograph or comment may severely impact their future ambitions. Too many teenagers and adults believe information posted online re mains private for friends and family. In fact, uploaded content becomes public domain, opening doors for unintended eyes to see. I created Virallock to ensure that young teenagers, college students and job applicants receive equal opportunities for success.Your viral footprint might not seem significant now. However, at some point in your life, and most likely without you knowing, others will scan your social media platforms in order to gain insight into your character. With the introduction of more and more social media platforms, it becomes difficult to distinguish between good and bad content. It also requires time to scan and delete potential damaging content, especially if your photo count is in the thousands and you posted content eight years ago. Relying on social media experts like Virallock helps protect your viral footprint. Virallock performs extensive website evaluations and provides recommendations and continued monitoring to support young world wide web users in their efforts to access educational and professional opportunities through social media. In general, all Internet users must be smart about their digital footprint, and take the time to establish a positive online reputation since users rarely know who might be reviewing their profile.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. An office affair can get ugly. Ellen Pao explains why.
An office affair can get ugly. Ellen Pao explains why. An office affair can get ugly. Ellen Pao explains why. More than two years after losing a gender discrimination lawsuit against her former employer, Ellen Pao is finally telling her side of the story. In an excerpt of her upcoming memoir for The Cut, Pao explains why she sued Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, one of the top Silicon Valley venture capital firms, for $16 million in 2012 for retaliation and failing to promote her because she was a woman, and why she has no regrets about this decision despite losing the case on all four counts in a high-profile trial. When Ladders reached out to Kleiner Perkins about Paoâs allegations, the company refuted the claims.âWe support Ellen Paoâs mission and efforts through Project Include to improve workplace culture for women and other under-represented groups,â the firm said in a statement to Ladders. âHowever, Paoâs claims against Kleiner Perkins were examined thoroughly during a five-week trial in 2015 and were rejected by the jury which ruled against her on every claim.âIn her re telling, Pao details how an office affair became the catalyst to her lawsuit. After she ended a short-lived fling with Ajit Nazre, a fellow partner at the firm, Pao alleged that Nazre became hostile towards her, excluding her from meetings and giving her negative reviews when he was promoted. When Pao lodged formal complaints, the firm offered to transfer her to a different office. It wasnât until a fellow female partner came forward with similar harassment allegations that Nazre left the firm with a reportedly plush buyout. If you have an office romance, plan aheadPaoâs story is an example of the perils you may face if you enter an office romance. Here are tips to remember before embarking on one.1. Read up on company policy. Learn if your office romance is allowed and how discreet youâll need to be. 2. Anticipate the end. No one likes thinking about worst-case scenarios, but itâs important to know how you and your office romantic partner will handle yourselves if the relationship ends. Can you still act professionally? Will one of you need to leave? Itâs hard to discuss these things, especially if the relationship is a secret- but if you donât, there will be even more awkward surprises. 3. Involve human resources. Ultimately, itâs their job to mediate. The is the last resort employees should use if personal mediation doesnât work. Unfortunately for Pao, Kleiner Perkins didnât even have a human resources department until she and another female partner raised their concerns about it.4. Start to wrap your mind around potentially having to leave the workplace if you canât work out a breakup without awkardness. Office relationships can often get complicated enough, and when the feelings go deeper it becomes harder to stay focused and professional. The âPao effectâ: If you speak up at all, you will influence othersIf you do decide to speak up about an office affair gone wrong, be prepared for the flood of publicity it may entail. Cases in which colleagues speak of affairs are rare, and as a result, are widely discussed and even receive news coverage if there is enough money or influence at stake. It can often fall to the person who speaks up to offer uncomforta ble details and justify his or her actions on a public stage. Itâs a lot of heat to take, and it may transform how you see yourself. For instance, Pao did not speak much publicly before the case, but since itâs been filed sheâs become a prominent speaker about tech discrimination in whatâs called the âPao effect.â Other woman like Uberâs Susan Fowler would come forward with their own stories, causing big changes at other companies. The excerpt is the first time Pao has shared some details, and they offer an insight into what drove her to take a public role in speaking up about her case and the office culture she worked in. When she was asked by an outside investigator about her complaints, Pao said he asked her why the firm kept women âaroundâ if it was biased against them.Paoâs sharp response: âIf you had the opportunity to have workers who were overeducated, underpaid, and highly experienced, whom you could dump all the menial tasks you didnât want to do on, whom you could get to clean up all the problems, and whom you could create a second class out of, wouldnât you want them to stay?âAlthough Pao said she wouldâve handled aspects of her trial differently now, she does not regret turning down a million-dollar severance agreement, going forward with her case and becoming a face of change in tech.âIâll grant that only someone a little bit masochistic would sign up for the onslaught of personal attacks that comes with a high-profile case, but I reject the argument that I wasnât the right person to bring suit,â she wrote. âI believed I had an obligation to speak out about what Iâd seen.â

10 Ways Holiday Parties Can Help Your Job SearchOr Hurt It
10 Ways Holiday Parties Can Help Your Job Searchâ"Or Hurt It 10 Ways Holiday Parties Can Help Your Job Search- Or Hurt It Theyâre heeeere. All those invites to holiday parties. Work parties. Neighbor parties. Family parties. Friend parties. So many parties. And while it might be tempting to sit them out, or go only for the food and festivities (reason enough!), there are a few compelling reasons why going to holiday parties can help your job search- or hurt it if youâre not careful. Here are five ways holiday parties can help your job search: 1. They can help you practice your conversational skills. Even if you donât go into every conversation with an agenda to advance your job search prospects, every single person you speak with is a chance to practice and improve upon your conversation skills. Get used to asking a lot of questions, using active listening techniques, and remembering peopleâs names. 2. They can offer an opportunity for you to ask questions and learn something new. Even if youâre at a party where no one works in an industry or job youâd actually want, you can ask general questions that will help your job search. Spark some ideas for your own job search by asking things like: How did you find your last job? What are the strangest job interview questions youâve been asked? Have you ever hired someone? What makes a person stand out to you? 3. They are a great opportunity to meet new people and network, network, network. If youâre in the middle of a job search, youâve probably heard a million times that networking is the cornerstone of success. And thatâs because itâs true. But holiday parties provide a unique time to network without all the schmoozy, awkward conversations. Everyone is in a festive mood, so turn your networking into a bit of fun by striking up conversations with people you wouldnât normally talk to. Donât think of it as networking, so much as spreading holiday cheer. After each party, within a day or two at the most, connect with the people you met on LinkedIn. As the holidays fly by, it wonât be easy to remember all the new people youâve met, but LinkedIn is a great way to keep track of them. Be sure to personalize the generic message requesting them to connect with you. Include where you met them and your interest in whatever you chatted about. 4. They can be a great place to set up future coffee meetings or informational interviews. The holidays are a great excuse to reconnect with former colleagues and mentors, or to connect with new people. When you run into old contacts at holiday parties, or make new ones, be sure to invite them to coffee the following week. Or, if you meet people whose jobs or companies are of particular interest to you, ask them if theyâd be game to do an informational interview with you. If you run into any past colleagues with whom you worked well, ask if theyâll be a professional reference for you. The holidays bring out peopleâs generosity, which is great for your job search. 5. You can use the party to make a great first impression on future potential managers or colleagues. Make sure you bring your best self to these holiday parties, because you never know who youll meet, and how they might play a part in your career in the future! Act and dress in a professional way, and limit your alcohol consumption. And make a (positive) lasting impression on everyone you meet! While the above can all be very beneficial to your search, there are also a number of ways a holiday party could actually hurt your job search, so be sure to steer clear of these âoopsâ moments. Here are five ways your behavior at holiday parties can hurt your job search. 1. You talk about yourself too much. It happens a lot- youâre nervous, youâre not sure what to say, and you end up talking about yourself rather than asking people about themselves. Practice asking questions before you go to any holiday parties so youâll have a mental list to pull from when youâre particularly nervous. Or engage in group conversations where youâre less likely to feel pressured, and you can listen to other peopleâs questions and answers. 2. You run into a former employer or manager with whom you didnt have a great relationship. Like an old boyfriend, we all have a former employer that gets our blood boiling. But a holiday party is not the time to take your former employer or manager to task. If you want to vent a little bit in friendly conversation, refrain from using specific company names or the names of managers and colleagues with whom you didnât get along. 3. You spend the whole time complaining. When a job search runs through the holiday season, you can feel doubly stressed. Holiday parties, however, are not the place bring up your financial troubles or your flailing search for a new job. Keep your conversations light and positive, no matter how difficult that seems. 4. You ask people for a job. Even if this were an actual networking event, its never appropriate to explicitly ask someone for a job. Doing so can make you come off as an entitled, unprofessional, or worse, desperate person. Its fine to strike up conversations with people who might be able to help you out in the future (of course, thats once youve established a mutually beneficial relationship), but this isnt the time to put anyone in an uncomfortable spot by asking for a job or help getting one. 5. You get drunk. No article about networking at holiday parties would be complete without this note: donât get drunk! The thing is, we donât actually think that most people who become âthe drunk guyâ at a holiday party actually plan to be that person. The nerves, the awkward conversations, the festivities, the lights- itâs a perfect situation to drink more than you realize. If youâre going to drink, alternate your glass of wine with a glass of water, or challenge yourself to see how long you can nurse one cup.

The real reason you should have a lemon everyday
The real reason you should have a lemon everyday The real reason you should have a lemon everyday We know youâve been told plenty of times over the past couple of years to eat lemon in some fashion every single day, and we need to reiterate that yet again. But this time, itâs not about detoxing or purifying your body, upping your vitamin C intake or following the trendy alkaline diet. Itâs about helping your digestive system do what it already does - just more efficiently.Lemons are one of the only foods in our diets that are compatible with the digestive fluids present in our stomachs. What does this mean for you exactly? Well, when you down enough lemon, be it in water, tea, freshly made lemonade (with limited sugar) or a homemade citrus salad dressing, you improve your stomachâs ability to break down the foods youâre consuming much more completely and reap the nutritional benefits they have to offer. This means extracting all of those great vitamins and minerals from produce and taking in all of the important amino acids you can derive from high-protein foo d sources.Such an easy way to boost your health, right? We think so, too. Plus, it tastes pretty great and wonât break your grocery budget. So, identify a few fun ways to integrate lemon into your daily diet, and stock up on that citrus. We love squeezing a bit into our breakfast smoothies for extra zing and zesting it into our meat and fish marinades. Can Recruiters Find YOU 5 Online Methods to Borrow
Can Recruiters Find YOU 5 Online Methods to Borrow Can Recruiters Find YOU 5 Online Methods to Borrow Veteran recruiter Joe Turner describes online routes to the short list when professional talent scouts are looking for candidates.I was a recruiter for more than 15 years, so job seekers often ask me for advice on how to meet recruiters and how to make working with recruiters a beneficial experience. My reply is not always what they want to hear: Top recruiters donât want to meet you. They donât want you to call them, and they donât want you to send your resume to them. They are already wired into their own network of potential candidates in the fields they cover. If theyâre doing their jobs correctly, they already know all the top candidates in their fields or know where to find them. In other words, if they want to meet you, theyâll find you.But these are the people you want to meet! These are the executive search firms that will introduce you to a company or corporate recruiters who want to fill open positions. There are ways you can increase the odds that they will find y ou. By making sure you are visible in the places recruiters look for new talent and by optimizing your profile to appear high in their search for candidates, you can increase the odds youâll become one of those candidates recruiters in your field seek out.1. Build and update a LinkedIn profileâIf youâre not online, you donât exist.â Thatâs the motto of many recruiters today. And for many of them, âonlineâ means one place: LinkedIn. According to a recent survey of U.S. hiring managers, 66 percent used LinkedIn to find job candidates for openings, 23 percent used Facebook, and 16 percent used Twitter. If you havenât done so already, visit both LinkedIn and Facebook to establish a profile page that describes who you are. Keep it professional, but make it an expression of your professional personality. Whet the appetites of visitors to your page. Update it regularly.2. Advertise yourself with a Unique Selling PropositionDescribe yourself with a brief sentence â" a Uniq ue Selling Proposition. A USP is a one-sentence description that says who you are, what your biggest strength is and the greatest benefit you bring. For example:âHands-on Operations Manager with strong people and team-building skills who has helped produce revenues of $2.8 million with a 22 percent margin for my previous employer.âPlace this sentence in your profile header as a starter to explain what distinguishes you from others in your field. Include your previous employers as well as the briefest descriptors about you.3. Add your LinkedIn profile URL to your resumeOnce youâve built your profile, make sure you make it easy for recruiters and hiring managers to find you on the Web. Add this link directly to your resume right under your contact information.4. Ask for LinkedIn recommendationsAmassing recommendations is like stockpiling referrals before you need them. Once again, you want to make it easy for recruiters and hiring managers. A great way to provide them with good f eedback about your work is with LinkedIn recommendations. A recommendation is merely someone saying something good about you. Make a list of your past (and present) bosses, supervisors, colleagues and clients. If theyâre on LinkedIn as well, they can provide you with a recommendation. Donât be afraid to ask, since most will be more than glad to do this for you. When theyâre done, youâll have a number of professional recommendations easily seen by anyone who visits your profile page.5. Make yourself an expertYou can also employ tools like LinkedIn and Facebook to extend your network. Youâll find hundreds of groups on LinkedIn beyond the obvious ones dedicated to alumni and job search. With a little searching youâll also find groups of people dedicated to the advancement or discussion of their particular profession or industry as well as people seeking solutions to specific problems.Recruiters will often monitor groups relevant to the industries in which they specialize an d keep an eye on outstanding members. Once youâre a member, you can initiate new discussion threads for others to join. You can ask and answer questions; if members of the group deem your answer the most relevant or helpful, you gain visibility within the group. Recruiters definitely notice these people, since they prove to be the movers and shakers within their profession. They make the short list for a check on your profile and a potential e-mail or LinkedIn direct message to your inbox.Start with LinkedIn as a tool to gain the attention that will merit a call. Then you can move to incorporate both Facebook and Twitter into your job-search marketing.

How to Ask Someone to be Your Mentor
How to Ask Someone to be Your Mentor How to Ask Someone to be Your Mentor How to Ask Someone to be Your MentorAs a growing professional, a mentor can be invaluable as you move forward in your career. Great mentors can be a sounding board for your ideas, provide helpful and insightful advice, introduce you to talented people in your industry, and maybe even help you secure a new position. The relationship you have with your mentor can help you progress more quickly and make the right decisions to aid in your continued professional success. The perfect mentor will probably not find you, so you will likely need to proactively nurture and cultivate a relationship that will benefit you. Itâs not as simple as walking up to the CEO of your company and asking, âDo you want to be my mentor?â You will need to select the right individual and build an open and honest relationship with that person so that mentorship begins to happen organically. Here are some strategies to use when trying to find and request the right mentor.Find the Right PersonThere are some thi ngs you need to do before you send out an email blast to senior executives to see if anyone will bite. First, it's essential that you find the person who can help you the most, who has the time to help you and shares communication preferences with you. Consider what you are looking for in your career and what you want to gain from a mentor. As mentioned earlier, the CEO of a company may not be the best resource for you. After all, they have a lot on their plate and may not be able to make enough time to have an impact on your career. You will want to choose someone who is a few levels above you, who has qualities you want to emulate, and who has the time and dedication to helping you. Think about who you admire, most often it would be someone in your organization, and how their goals and career path align with yours. If you canât immediately identify the right person, reach out to your human resources department. Sometimes, your company might have a mentorship program that will app oint a mentor based on specific criteria. If your organization does not have this type of program, human resources personnel might still be an excellent resource for helping you to identify or arranging an introduction with someone in your company.Do your research preemptively, on your industry and the person you are hoping to approach so that if you do meet them, you have knowledge on their background and are able to ask them questions that they can answer. You donât want to ask someone about a project that theyâve never worked on, or about a situation that theyâve never encountered as they wonât be able to offer advice. Instead, prepare and ask them poignant questions about their experiences that pertains to your career.Make the RequestOnce youâve found the ideal person you want to have as your mentor, itâs now time to begin your relationship. There does not need to be a formal request for mentorship, especially in the beginning. If you donât know the person at all, they might be caught off guard or overwhelmed if you just ask them outright to be your mentor. Their communication style might not match with yours, and if they agreed to be your mentor, you may be stuck with someone that you don't work well with. It's essential to have an informal meeting, where you ask them for some advice, to kick off your relationship and learn if you both want to continue meeting from there. Start the relationship by asking for one piece of advice. Your initial introduction should let them know what you admire most about them (i.e., career path, work, ability to lead, etc.). Then ask if you could ask them for advice on your own career. Respect their time and make the first meeting quick and informal, like grabbing a cup of coffee. Requesting one hour for lunch right off the bat will probably scare off your potential mentor.Examples - How to Ask Someone to Be Your MentorHello Mr. Doe,Iâve been admiring your career path from afar for quite some time. Your leade rship skills are an inspiration to me, and I was wondering if I could ask you for advice on my own career? All Iâm asking for is 15 minutes of your time, and I would love to buy you a cup of coffee in return. Let me know if you are open to a meeting and what your schedule looks like over the coming weeks.Thank you,Jane DoeIf you meet for coffee and the meeting goes well, you can discuss the idea of setting up a recurring meeting once a quarter. Once you become more familiar with the person or if youâve chosen a mentor that you already know well, you can certainly make a more formal request. In this situation, you need to be clear with them on your expectations of the relationship. How often would you like to meet, will it be in person or over the phone? These are all things you need to establish up front, so your mentor has a clear idea of what you need from them. You should also clarify what you plan to discuss with them. Will you be asking this person for advice on how to deal with work situations, will you turn to them to discuss potential career changes, are you looking for training? These are all things your mentor should be aware of so that they can dedicate the right amount of time and resources to help you.Be PoliteNo matter how your potential mentor responds, you need to be gracious and thank them, even if their response is negative. Whether they agree to be your mentor or not, you want to keep this relationship professional and open. The intended mentor might be too busy right now, but they might think of you if their schedule opens, so always be courteous and be sure to keep the relationship positive and open-ended.If they seem to be on the fence, ask them if there is anything you can do for them in return. In some circumstances, there might be something you can offer them, be it sharing articles theyâve written or helping them promote an upcoming project they have. If there is something of value you can offer them, it will lead to a more symb iotic relationship where you are both helping each other.Having a mentor that you can turn to for career advice can transform your career, make you a better employee and help you progress forward. Choosing the right person and introducing yourself in the right way can make all the difference in your future success. Often, people in higher positions once had a mentor help them, and they are excited to pay it forward. However, they want it to be comfortable with clear expectations laid out for them. Follow these pieces of advice to begin working your way toward a positive mentorship relationship and continue progressing forward in your career.
